14 June 2001 Final Report
The combined staging of IA, ICAM ASIA and LOGISMAT 2001 was opened by Mr Inderjit Singh, Deputy Chairman of GPC for Finance and Trade & Industry and Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC on 5 June 2001. In his opening address, Mr Singh indicated that "the slowdown of global economy can be a challenge for the manufacturing sector" and that "in order for the manufacturing sector to compete effectively and efficiently, we have to continually keep abreast of the intensifying changes in technology." He added that "the manufacturing sector has started to aggressively employ digital technologies to configure their business models." Mr Colin Koh, President of the Singapore Industrial Automation Association (SIAA) echoed Mr Singh's message and mentioned in his speech that "In today's business environment, it is imperative that Systems Integrators … work closely with components suppliers to offer integrated solutions to end-users so as to provide total enterprise automation." Mr Koh went on to state that exhibitions such as IA, ICAM ASIA and LOGISMAT 2001 will showcase exhibits that will "encompass a broad spectrum of areas essential to successful knowledge-based manufacturing, such as IT for manufacturing, total enterprise automation and supply chain management." The four-day exhibition attracted 227 companies from 25 countries including 2 national group participation from Germany and Singapore. The Regional Marketing Manager of the Sensing & Control division at Honeywell Asia Pacific, Mr Nick Lim commented that the combination of IA/ ICAM ASIA/ LOGISMAT "becomes advantageous to Honeywell… as it allows us to showcase our diversified range of products and therefore enables us to provide a complete solution to the end-users." He remains unfazed in the face of the economic slowdown and assured that their presence was meant to affirm their commitment to their customers and that they will still be around when the economy turns for the better. Mr Syed Mansoor Raza, a research associate with GINTIC was pleased with the quality of visitors at his booth. "Visitors came with a specific reason/ need to be met which goes to show that they are qualified and they know what they are looking for." He feels that this show is an ideal platform to show their competency and to provide solutions to customers and was happy to be able to discuss with them their technical problems very effectively. Another satisfied exhibitor was Mr Chan Boon Chew, a sales manager with MHE-Dematic (S) Pte Ltd who noted that he received many quality leads from local and overseas visitors. Visitors were generally pleased with the exhibition as well. They gave the wide range of new and innovative technologies featured two thumbs up despite a fall in the number of participating companies. Feedback received from the visitors found that more than 60% thought that the exhibition was interesting while more than 70% felt that their visit was useful in relation to their work. Mr Denver Bunzel, a visitor from Australia, found his visit to the exhibition very useful and commented, "A whole heap of good technologies with knowledgeable people to explain how they work and good demos." Another satisfied visitor was Mr Elis Kristiana from Indonesia who found his visit educational as he got to "learn about the technology" at the show. Mr Tony Rumbold of New Zealand said that he was able to "keep up to date with the new products and technologies" displayed. Many visitors from Singapore commented that they were able to see "more modern technology" on display that will help them "to improve work". They were satisfied with their visit as it was not lacking in "new and latest information" on automation. Despite the downturn in the manufacturing sectors and slowdown of a number of countries in Asia, IA/ ICAM ASIA/ LOGISMAT 2001 was visited by 5,430 trade visitors and professionals from 49 countries at press time.
